Horn-eyed Ghost Crab

<p> 5Yrs ago i went Kutch,Gujarat for birding 1st time, clicked so many birds in morning session and in the evening again went for birds but sighted less birds than morning session. So went more away from parked car  and saw Horn-eyed Ghost Crabs. They were gathering sea sand and making pillers of sand to attract female for matting so i get down, crawled and took some photos. bit difficult for me to get closure and took photos coz they were moving fast and unable to focus so tried for video.</p><p>i had taken 4 videos but 2 were out of focus so merged them and also added photos. it was end of our 2nd day's evening safari and we were returning,but still we were looking for leopards for sighting.we told our gypsy driver to drive fast to go near by to ground level water tank coz wild animals mostly came there before sun set.<br />
while we reach at one of ground level water tank,we had sighted Indian Golden Jackal and it was drinking water.it was great moment to watch such activity,we had clicked some shots.after drinking water,sudden it jump down to ground and started running towards us,might be it ignored us or whatever but we were lucky to frame straight body pose.<br />

We
 were on family trip of Saurastra with my family n my cousin's family.as
 on 24th November we were at Gir National Park for Lion safari.it was 
around 2.30pm n our safari driver picked us from our resort.while we 
were on the way to park,rain showering was started n we all thought for 
full rain but finally it stops.Around 3.15pm we had entered in 
the park.during safari our guide told us some info n rules.I had told him for birding.<br />
after 
5mins we saw a monitor lizard, Spotted Deer, Sambar Deer. after 
drive of 30-40min our gypsy sudden stopped n guide shows the spotted 
owlet,it was just 10-15ft away from us.due to other gypsy came we moved ahead.<br />
After 1+hr of drive we 
didn't seen a lion/lioness,most of returning gypsy driver had told us 
that they had not seen a lion/lioness.so we r lil disappointed but 
finger crossed for our kids.<br />
Another 5-10mins of drive i saw a 
leopard n asked to stop the gypsy but while we stop, leopard walked 
inside,it was just 40-45ft away.its a
 1st wow moment.our guide also told us that u r lucky to see.<br />
We 
all were talking n our guide told to stop talking as he seen the other gypsy r 
stopped at a point n our guide shows us 2 Lions...yeah...1st time i saw 
them in jungle.<br />

Vansda National Park gives lots species to me even though i wish to go there bi-monthly there.we had planned get together of our "Bird Watchers of Gujarat" 2nd meet there on 26 and 27th feb'17 with forest department of dang,gujarat and forest department of north and south dang gave us a appreciation certificate.so we have to take this honor to receive from DCF of North and South Dang division around at 5pm.<br />
so planned to visit Vansda National Park in morning session.we entered around after 8.30am and thought to find emerald dove n went a specific location but cudn't find. my friend Hiren Joshi told to find flying Indian Flying Fox with chicks,its a interesting but very difficult to find and then focus and click coz trees are very tall n there is a limited space between trees so we were unable to find and focus.<br />
Give up myself coz its much difficult to do in limited area so Hiren Joshi asked, very few have such shots and accepted challenge.we had spent more than 50mins there and clicked many shots of flying Indian Flying Fox with chicks.<br />
so here is one of them.<br />

it was an another cold morning of january'17 and as talked with my friend Viren Desai i was at our birding spot around at 8.30am on 12/01/17.<br />
before he came i was exploring area for new winter birds but didn't sighted.around 9.30am he came n we were went inside on that road beside Tapi river.<br />
i was little afraid of dogs due to category 3 dog bite 3yrs back and one dog was coming towards us with one man with horse,i gave way to that dog.we were sitting on dusty road and clicking yellow-eyed babbler and Tawny-bellied babbler,sudden hear noise and that dog was coming towards us.as thought to stand up n went inside to give a way to dog but don't know why,focused on it clicked 2-3 shots n after click, when i saw it looks more beautiful but whole dog was not in frame so reduced to 500mm and again clicked.in only one shot, dog was fully in frame and looks marvelous. <br />

i was shocked when my friend Dharmesh Kadiwala aka DK called me around
 at 4pm and asked "doctor get ready for night roam in car & photography at 6pm",coz we 
have to roam in Bardoli outskirt for Leopard.we had read in news paper n
 even got info that Leopard was sighting since 2 days.<br />
i went to 
DK's home around at 6.30pm on 19/02/16,parked my car then we went 
towards Bardoli in DK's Duster.After reaching there,took our dinner of 
Khichdi and Hiren came around 7pm.<br />
we had checked lights,camera 
settings and journey started around at 7.30pm.i was so excited as it was
 my 1st experience,even little afraid.<br />
We were roaming here n there surrounding Bardoli for sighting of Leopard.Around 11pm we sighted this beauty n cudn't stop our self to came out for his portrait photography.<br />

I feel.its a achievement of taking frame of flying birds or Running Animal or jumping animals coz its little difficult to focus.<br />
As mention story at <a href="http://www.yugworld.net/2016/10/indian-grey-wolf.html#.WA9lXyRsZzk">Indian Grey Wolf</a> i was at Blackbuck National Park Velavdar on 20/10/16 with my friends. i was specially there for harrier but cudn't stop myself to click jumping blackbuck.as we were roaming in Blackbuck natinal park and seen this Blackbuck from far ready to run so very quickly focus on it but before i focus it started running with jump.this photo was soft n log distance shot but like it.<br />

Indian Grey Wolf

Blackbuck National Park, Velavdar is the heaven for Harrier lovers.Except Pied Harrier,all Harriers came there between August to March for wintering.They roost on ground and hunts locusts,snakes,lizard,small rodents and birds which help as biological pest control to farm crops,maintains the Eco-system of grassland.<br />
Pankaj have to go at Bhavnagar medical collage as an external examiner for final exam on 19/10/16 so we had planned a trip of Blackbuck National Park,Velavdar on 20th.many of my friend wanna join me but didn't informed them as if we go in 2-3 cars the person in 1st car took photos n rest will none.<br />
So i set a plan with my best friend and birders Viren Desai, Hiren Joshi and Dharmesh Kadiwala to go Blackbuck National Park in noon of 19th.<br />
i went to Kadiwala's home to pick him and then went Bardoli to pick Hiren n Viren.thought to cross bharuch 4.30pm but we were at bardoli at 4.30pm and Pankaj checked in at Blackbuck National Park's dormitory.we had reached around at 12.30am after hectic traffic.<br />
After 5hrs of sleep coz we were on discussion for our website <a href="http://birdsofgujarat.co.in/">http://birdsofgujarat.co.in</a> ,we were all ready for morning safari for Indian Grey Wolf after tea at dormitory n went inside with guide Sikandar after pay of entry fee n camera fee.searched at each suspected location for sighting but failed to sight it.Even we did photography of harriers at both side of park.ended before closure of park in noon.<br />
we went outside of park, on a highway for lunch and after 1hr came back.thought for some sleep at rest room but don't know i was unable to sleep.we again went inside the park for evening safari.now our focus was on harriers specially on male harriers.The reason was they looks beautiful due to their color.and succeed for Montagu's harriers male gives some excellent flying shots.<br />
Around 4.30pm our guide told to go at lake side/water collection side coz Indian Grey Wolf might come there for water drink n bath.frankly speaking i was against to there coz one wishlist bird "pallid harrier male" was still pending and if we went there,time will lapse n sunlight will gone so photo will not click good, still we went there n luckily sighted Indian Grey Wolf,credit to our guide Sikandar who sighted from far and we went there very hurriedly coz they were about to run inside and speedily we focused and clicked,got 5-6 shots from long distance.not a good click but happy to sighted there.shot was against the light but love this evening light.<br />

i don't likes cats and dogs after bite by dog,3-4yrs back coz i dont know whats my fault and that dog bite me in a garden while i was walking.<br />
one cat was a frequent visitor of my backyard,sometime it sit there.one day i hear a sound of baby kittens.still avoid to see them,one day my wife told me,its looks so beautiful n click them so on 31st July tried to click with 50mm but they were angry on me n revert back to 600mm.<br />
They had broken my many small trees which were in pots.got only 2-3 good shots and here is one of them.<br />

After entrance of park,we had sighted lots Spotted Deer,while i was clicking our guide told to avoid clicking as we will seen many deers in park coz our target was lion so replied "ok".after 15-20 minute,i saw a Spotted Deer (Male) sitting close to road n i asked to stop as it was awesome frame.And as expected got superb shot.<br />

We went again at Modhava Beach around at 3pm on 30/04/16 for frame Flamingos with Sunset.but our bad luck was there.The sun was playing hide n seek in the clouds n falmingos were also fly away so i was lil disappointed coz we went there for this moment n traveled aprx 700km n we lost moments.<br />
But thanks to our friend Nirav Pomal who told us to frame crab known as Horn-eyed Ghost Crab, scientific name is Ocypode brevicornis.at first i had avoided to click but Nirav,Pankaj and Hiren were lying down on ground so i haven't choice to do other coz there were no birds.there were many crabs and we were very close to each other so myself moved at other side n clicked some good shots then seen big crab n moved at that side,lying down myself n very carefully crawl till better view for photo and video.<br />

These are usually on sandy beach near or above the high water mark. It is said that when tunneling out their burrow, the crab carry sand to about 50-100 cm away from the burrow entrance, then toss the sand as far as it can. This behaviour probably explains the typical "spray" pattern of sand around the burrow. The burrow can be quite deep. <br />
<br />
Body width 6-8cm. Body squarish box-like. Usually bluish grey with brown markings on the back, often in the shape of an "H". But a variety of other patterns also seen. Pincers long, downward pointing often with white or pale claws. Has a vertical ridge on the inside of the 'palm' that produces a rasping sound when rubbed against the rough surface of the face. This is probably done to declare their territory. Legs long with pointed tips. Large eyes on short stalks which can fold away into grooves on the body when the crab burrows into the sand. Adult crabs have a characteristic tall skinny point or 'horn' on top of each eye (called the stylophthalmous), usually darker in colour. The horn is shorter in females and absent in juveniles (2.5cm or smaller). A study found that juveniles can change their body colour and pattern to match the surrounding sand, usually becoming lighter during the day and darker at night.<br />

Ghost crabs are well adapted for life out of water and are among the few marine creatures that roam the beaches at low tide, particularly at night. They run rapidly on the sand and can burrow quickly into wet sand. They can stay for a long time away from the sea because they can absorb water from the wet sand through special hairs on the base of their legs by capillary action.<br />
<br />
Ghost crabs can really run fast! As suggested by their scientific name ("Ocy" means swift and "podi" foot in Greek). They literally fly over the sand and their movement has been described as a small leaf blowing over the sand surface. In fact, they may be among the fastest land creatures, moving at 100 bodylengths per second. In comparison, the cockroach does 50 bodylengths while the cheetah does a sluggish 10 bodylengths. Ghost crabs are only beaten by tiger beetles which do 171 body lengths when they are really scared. Being fast moving creatures, Ghost crabs have excellent eyesight to see where they are going. So, if a ghost crab was of comparable size, they’d be running at something close to 340 and 530 Km/h!<br />
Same as Human they are also right n left hand sided mean if it have big claw on right hand side then it is a right handed.<br />

They make small mountain to attract the female for mating,i was lucky to film the making of this mountain.they are Nature's Architect.<br />

Lioness - The Queen of Sasan Gir

On a Sasan gir trip,after framing of two lions we r on our root.after drive of 15min we show this queen,she looks so beautiful.i had clicked only 2 shots as my guide had seen other group of lioness n young cubs so we moved further.<br />
out of 2 shots the 1st shot was out of focused due to handheld n the lioness was behind the tree.<br />

 were on family trip of Saurastra with my family n my cousin's family.as
 on 24th November we were at Gir National Park for Lion safari.it was 
around 2.30pm n our safari driver picked us from our resort.while we 
were on the way to park,rain showering was started n we all thought for 
full rain but finally it stops.Around 3.15pm we had entered in 
the park.during safari our guide told us some info n rules.I had told him for birding.<br />
after 
5mins we saw a monitor lizard, Spotted Deer, Sambar Deer. after 
drive of 30-40min our gypsy sudden stopped n guide shows the spotted 
owlet,it was just 10-15ft away from us.due to other gypsy came we moved ahead.<br />
After 1+hr of drive we 
didn't seen a lion/lioness,most of returning gypsy driver had told us 
that they had not seen a lion/lioness.so we r lil disappointed but 
finger crossed for our kids.<br />
Another 5-10mins of drive i saw a leopard n asked to stop the gypsy but while we stop leopard walked inside,it was 40-45ft away.its a
 1st wow moment.our guide also told us that u r lucky to see.<br />
We 
all were talking n our guide told to stop talking as he seen the other gypsy r 
stopped at a point n our guide shows us 2 Lions...yeah...1st time i saw 
them in jungle.<br />

How can i express my Happiness...coz it was extra happy moments in my life.till now i hate photography,so never tried.<br />

after drive of 5min we seen 2 lioness n 3-4cubs.my huby was busy in clicking n asking my son to click but he was lost himself in this moment to see all thing n forget to click so i picked the camera n 1st time clicked but photo was blurred coz i dont know how to click?... lens was 55-250mm n it was at 55mm so i asked my hubby..lioness n cubs were far away so he expand it to 250mm.when i tried to see in view finder,there was nothing to see so again i asked him n he remind me to half press shutter button n when u see it clear then click. and i got this image.<br />
